The RiverFront in downtown Omaha has welcomed 10 million visitors since the parks began reopening following their historic transformation. The milestone represents more than a number — it marks millions of moments of connection, celebration, recreation and discovery across Omaha’s 72-acre park system.
Since Gene Leahy Mall reopened on July 1, 2022, followed by the reopening of Heartland of America Park and Lewis & Clark Landing on August 18, 2023, The RiverFront has welcomed visitors from Omaha and beyond and hosted more than 3,000 events, most of which have been free and open to the public.
A Gathering Place in the Heart of Omaha
Located between Omaha’s historic Old Market and the vibrant north downtown, The RiverFront has quickly become a popular destination for residents and visitors looking to experience the outdoors, attend community events and enjoy recreational activities in the heart of the city.
“The RiverFront has quickly become a point of pride for our community and a must-see destination for all those coming to Omaha,” said Adam Straight, Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority (MECA) President & CEO. “As stewards of The RiverFront for the Omaha community, MECA looks forward to caring for the parks for the next 10 million visitors and continuing to find ways to activate all 72 acres of the parks to ensure everyone, of all ages and walks of life, has the opportunity to make memories at The RiverFront.”
10 Million Visitors and Counting
The 10 millionth visitor milestone was celebrated Friday evening ahead of the fourth annual The RiverFront One Community Cultural Festival: Sounds of the City with the Omaha Symphony.
To commemorate the occasion, MECA President & CEO selected one lucky park patron and her family as the honorary 10 millionth visitors. The family received a year of free skate rentals, a RiverFront swag bag, and a remote controlled boat to enjoy in the Boat Cove.
The milestone reflects the wide variety of events and experiences that have brought people to The RiverFront over the years.
Major events contributing to the park’s growth include:
- The RiverFront Annual Independence Day Celebrations
- Water Lantern Festival
- The RiverFront One Community Cultural Festival
- Bud Crawford Victory Parades
- Bats Over Omaha
- Friday Night Flicks
- Taste of Omaha
- New Year’s Eve Firework Extravaganza
More Than Events: A Park for Everyday Omaha
While major events have helped bring millions of visitors to The RiverFront, the parks have also become part of everyday life in Omaha.
Visitors use The RiverFront year-round for lunchtime breaks, runs, dog walks, play dates, first dates, after-dinner strolls, outdoor workouts, and roller and ice skating.
“The 10 million visitors represent the memories made, the connections formed, and the sense of community that has grown throughout The RiverFront,” said Jaden Hill, MECA Senior Director of Parks. “We are proud to provide a place where people can gather, celebrate and experience the very best of Omaha.”
An Award Winning Downtown Omaha Destination
The RiverFront’s 72 acres have also earned recognition from local and national organizations, receiving 27 awards since 2019. The parks are designated as a Pollinator Haven and serve as an affiliate site for the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum — notable achievements for a park located in Omaha’s urban core.
